Difference Between SBI Clerk and IBPS Clerk- Which to choose & why ?

The State Bank of India and the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection are two major recruitment bodies for bank jobs. The major difference between these two is that SBI recruits clerks only for The State Bank of India, whereas IBPS Clerk recruitment takes place to appoint Clerks in 19 Public Sector Banks.

The Difference in Educational Eligibility of SBI and IBPS Clerks 

The educational qualification required is graduation. 

SBI-

The final year student or the one appearing in the final exam of their graduation can apply for the SBI clerk exam.

IBPS-

The candidate must possess a graduation degree.

The growth between SBI Clerks and IBPS clerks has some differences. A candidate working as an SBI clerk has a better chance to get promoted and opportunities than any other public sector bank. The policy in SBI is better than other public sector banks.

SBI Clerk Career Growth & Promotion

  • The candidates for the post of Junior Associate/Clerk will have to serve a minimum probation period of six months.
  • The performance of the clerk decides his promotion to the post of Junior Associate/Clerk.
  • The first promotion in SBI takes place after two-three years. 
  • There are two ways for a clerk to get promoted- ‘In-Cadre Promotions & Officer Cadre Promotions’
  • Cadre Promotion– It is done based on years of service completion.
  • Anyone completing ten years as an SBI clerk is eligible for promotion to the post of Senior Assistant.
  • Anyone completing twenty years as an SBI clerk is eligible for promotion to the post of Special Assistant.
  • Anyone completing thirty years is eligible for promotion to the post of Senior Special Assistant.
  • Officer Cadre Promotions are done based on written exams and Interviews.
  • Anyone completing three years as an SBO clerk can become a trainee Officer after qualifying written exam and Interview.
  • An SBI Clerk is eligible to become a Junior Manager Grade Scale (JMGS-I) officer, after clearing a written test & Interview when he/she completes the service period of six years.

SBI Clerk Vs IBPS Clerk – Selection Procedure

As an SBI or IBPS aspirant, one must be aware of the selection procedure for both exams. There is a slight difference between the selection procedure of SBI and IBPS. Selection Procedure- 

There are three phases in both exams – Prelims, Main exam, and Language proficiency test.

  • Prelims Exam: The prelim exams are common in both SBI and IBPS. The subjects in Prelims are Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability, and English Language. The exam constitutes 100 questions for 100 marks with a duration of 60 Minutes (1 hour). From this year onwards both SBI and IBPS have introduced 20 minutes sectional time limit for each of the three sections.
  • Main Exam: The next phase is the Main exam of SBI and IBPS.This exam has four subjects/sections Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language, and General Awareness. The exam constitutes 190 questions for 200 marks with a t duration of 160 minutes(2 hours and 40 minutes). The number of questions and time duration is similar in both the SBI clerk and IBPS clerk exam.
  • Language Proficiency Test: The last phase is the language proficiency test in both SBI and IBPS clerk exams. The test takes place after the declaration of the result of the main exam. The test examines the candidate’s ability to read, write and speak the local language. Therefore, the candidate must be proficient in the local language of the state for which he/ she has applied.
