What is SSC CGL Tax Assistant?

The post of Tax Assistant in CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) and CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) is of clerk grade.

This post is equivalent to Upper Divisional Clerk. That is, it is a ministerial post and not an executive post that comes under Group C.

Criteria for becoming SSC CGL Tax Assistant

Candidate has to clear the CGL exam conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

As per the new Exam Pattern of SSC CGL, there are two Tiers in this examination – Tier-I and Tier-II. After qualifying for Tier-I and Tier-II examinations, the candidates get selected based on their marks and cut-off.

SSC CGL Job Profile

CBCT and CBI have a slight difference in the job profile.

In CBCT, the Tax Assistant has to work on the executive side, such as checking income tax returns, managing the work related to the PAN, calculating the tax liability of companies and individuals, maintaining the tax demand lists, etc.

Clerical Grade Tax Assistant work is equal in both the field – CBDT and CBI. The only difference is that in CBI, the Tax Assistant has no work on the executive side. A tax Assistant works in three sections-

  • Administration Section
  • Establishment Section
  • Accounts Section

Given below are the responsibilities of a Tax Assistant –

  • Managing /making bills of all the employees (of the office) and calculating their income tax.
  • Settlement of the claims made by the employees like traveling allowance claims, Medical claims, LTC claims, etc.
  • Submission of their application leaves before the competent authority for acceptance.
  • Conduct the work-related administration in the office, like the maintenance of the office, purchasing the essential good, and distributing it among the employees.
  • To manage the establishment, like transfer/ posting work of employees, forward any representation received from them.
  • Preparing the monthly and Quarterly Reports.

Differences in the Job profile of Tax Assistant in CBIC and CBDT

Job Profile of Tax Assistant in CBIC.

  • The work of a Tax Assistant in the CBIC is clerical.
  • Their task is dispatching and preparing the reports.
  • They work under a Superintendent or Appraiser, but in some places, he also works under Examiner, PO, and Excise Inspector.

Job Profile of Tax Assistant in CBDT.

  • The main task is related to the assessment of the income tax of a company, firm, individual, partnership, etc.
  • You may also have to do clerical work related to diary and dispatch, noting, drafting, etc.
  • They can be asked to accompany the raid team.
